If you encounter a kilted figure at an exhibition you may well be speaking to John Burns of Burns Pet Nutrition who is a familiar figures at shows around the UK.
John Burns is a Scottish veterinary surgeon who started in general practice in West Wales in 1971. He soon found that he was not as well qualified in the healing arts as he would have liked.
Time and again John found himself telling owners of pets affected with skin disease;
" We don't Know what is causing the problem, we don't know how to cure it, but I can give drugs to relieve the symptoms until we really understand how to deal properly with the cause. "
John felt that in veterinary medicine, while drugs were useful in the treatment of acute illness, Curing chronic disease was well nigh impossible. He became interested in alternative medicine and qualified as an acupuncturist, but came to the conclusion that acupuncture, like conventional medicine is treating the symptoms and not the basic cause of the illness. In the seventies there was a great deal of interest in Macrobiotics, a lifestyle based on the use of natural, traditional methods of lifestyle, above all in our food. By experimenting on his own diet ("I ate a lot of brown rice," says John) he became convinced that physical and mental well being can be changed by diet, and that this principle could be adapted and applied to the practice of Veterinary Medicine.
When consulting in his clinic he recommended that owners avoid commercial pet foods and to Prepare instead home-cooked brown rice, vegetables, meat, chicken and fish for their pets. There were a sufficient number of successes to prove that the regime really worked. For five years, John Burns dispensed dietary advice along with veterinary treatment, but gradually he was forced to admit that only the most dedicated owners would stick to this method, and if pets were to be properly fed the food must be convenient and readily available.
So, Burns Pet Nutrition with its promise of "real food" entered the pet trade with "Burns Real Food for Dogs" . John now works full-time in his company, which sells his products throughout the UK and Ireland and even in the USA He routinely gives advice to pet owners on the use of diet to treat and prevent health problems.
