Canine Freestyle (alias Heelwork to Music alias DogDance)
Written by Attila Szkukalek PhD
attila_walkingOriginally the canine musical displays were obedience heelwork spiced with spins, circles, weaves, roll overs and jumps. However, most of the time the dog was walking at the side, in front or between the legs of the owner either facing the same or the opposite direction as its handler.
As the sport has developed more advanced moves, such as walking/jumping and turning on two legs, circling, reversing, weaving backwards etc. were introduced in programmes and many of them carried out by the dog at a distance from the owner. The freestyle programmes have no restrictions and give more opportunity for both the dog and handler to express themselves than the heelwork where the dog cannot jump or distance itself from the handler by more than 4 feet.

Why do I recommend Canine Freestyle? Quite simply it's addictive, however a few more detailed explanations might help:

Ø Unlike many other doggy sports it is open to any type and size of dog and owner to enjoy,
Ø Anyone who likes music and moving to music, can do this with his/her dog,
Ø It incorporates obedience, agility, handling and bonding between dog and owner at all levels, making it one of the most comprehensive dog-sports,
Ø The majority of freestyle dogs are clicker-trained and since the artistic impression is judged handlers cannot use punishment methods which would subdue the dog's enjoyment and spirit,
Ø Very importantly it is easy to practice even at home,
Ø There are divisions such 1 handler-1 dog, 2 handlers- 2 dogs and possibly very soon also teams will be able to compete, and...
Ø Finally as Patie Ventre, founder of the WCFO, sees it: “Canine Freestyle is a showcase that truly demonstrates the joys and fun of bonding with your pet”.

The Rhythmic Paws 2 (The Gladiator) video guides the viewers step by step through teaching their dogs to run big circles, ovals and figure 8, walking away from the handler forward and backwards, new creative moves such as side jumps, etc. and presents the Gladiator routine performed at the CRUFTS.
